ITT Corp. on Tuesday promoted Executive Vice President Edmund M. Carpenter to the posts of president and chief operating officer.

ITT, a diversified corporation whose products include telecommunications equipment and financial and insurance services, also appointed DeRoy C. Thomas and M. Cabell Woodward Jr. as vice chairmen.

Thomas was senior line manager in the services area and Woodward was chief financial officer.

All three will report to Rand V. Araskog, 53, ITT’s chairman and chief executive, who previously held the title of president.

The appointment of Carpenter, who is experienced in managing manufacturing businesses, signals a shift in ITT’s emphasis on its System 1240 telecommunications program from the developmental stage--which was overseen by Araskog--to all-out manufacture and production, ITT said.

Carpenter continues as president and chief executive of ITT Industrial Technology Corp. and succeeds John W. Guilfoyle as president and chief executive of ITT Telecommunications.

Guilfoyle has been reassigned as Araskog’s executive representative to governmental and other telecommunications customers.
