Belgian Eric Vanderaerden won Thursday’s 13th stage of the Tour de France bicycle race, a 20-mile individual time trial, while France’s Bernard Hinault retained the overall lead.

Vanderaerden finished in 41 minutes 4 seconds, with Hinault 1:07 behind, and one second ahead of France’s Thierry Marie. American Greg LeMond was 19th, 2:30 behind the leader.

Vanderaerden was a surprise winner over Hinault. The weather was calm when he rode as an early starter, but it was unfavorable for Hinault, the last starter, as the wind picked up.

Hinault’s overall time is 65 hours 32 minutes 19 seconds. LeMond, Hinault’s La Vie Claire teammate, is second overall, 5:23 behind.

Today is a day off for the riders, the only one on the tour, which started June 28 and ends in Paris July 21.
