Anaheim : Slow-Moving Freight Kills Unidentified Man
A pedestrian was killed early Saturday when he was dismembered by a Southern Pacific freight train near Santa Ana and Indiana streets in Anaheim, police said.
The man, who carried no identification, apparently was killed as the train was moving at 5 to 10 m.p.h., said Police Sgt. Del Wade. The death occurred about 4:45 a.m., Wade said.
“We don’t know if he was on the train and fell off or if he was trying to catch the train and fell,” Wade said. “We don’t know if he was trying to (commit suicide). He could have just accidently stepped into the train.”
The engineer was unaware of the accident until the freight was stopped by police, who were notified when a passing motorist found the body, Wade said.
A coroner’s investigator described the dead man as a Caucasian about 5 feet 2 and 130 pounds, wearing a plaid shirt, tan slacks and black boots with a white design.
