Wilander Defeats Jaite to Win U.S. Pro Title

BROOKLINE, Mass. — Top-seeded Mats Wilander, the world’s third-ranked tennis player, won the U.S. Pro tennis championship Monday night with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Martin Jaite of Argentina.
Wilander, of Sweden, completed his first visit to the clay courts here with his fifth consecutive straight-set victory in the $267,000 tournament. The last Swedish champion in this event was Bjorn Borg who won the tournament in 1974-76.
Jaite was seeded No. 11 here. He is ranked 40th in the world.
