Transpacific Race : Five Boats Remain at Sea, but Standings Called Official

With five boats still at sea Thursday--none of which could save their handicap time--the Transpacific Yacht Club announced the final standings and trophy winners in the 33rd Los Angeles to Honolulu race.

Still at sea, and expected to finish today were SBOC 2, Ariel and Droits del’Homme. Defiance, the yacht that was dismasted, was about 400 miles from Honolulu and is expected to finish Sunday.

The race will officially come to a close tonight with the gala trophy presentation dinner in Waikiki.

Receiving the King Kalakaua Perpetual for the first yacht on overall corrected time will be Jim and David Denning of Richmond, owner and skipper of the Cal-40 Montgomery Street, who were celebrating their eighth Transpac. Their take-home trophy will be the Governor’s Trophy, an elaborate hand-carved war canoe. They will also receive the Harry G. Steele Memorial for first in Class D.

The the trophy for first to finish will go to Nick Frazee, owner skipper of the 68-foot sloop Swiftsure III, San Diego. The trophy is a hand-carved Koa plaque known as the ‘barn door.’

The Skip Warren Memorial Trophy for the second yacht to finish on elapsed time will go to Keith Simmons, Fort Worth, Tex., skipper of the 68-foot Prima.

The Transpac offers 22 perpetual trophies plus take-homes for the various categories in fleet and class.
