An arrest warrant issued four years ago for U.S. Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese for failing to pay a $10 jaywalking ticket issued in 1980 in West Los Angeles will not be served because it was not promptly executed, police said. Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl F. Gates said he would recommend the warrant, issued a year later, be recalled as “null and void because there certainly was a lack of due diligence on our part.” Police spokesman Cmdr. William Booth said Gates offered to “perma-plaque” the warrant and send it to Meese as a souvenir. A spokesman for the city attorney’s office said his office was recalling the warrant because it was possible Meese had paid the ticket and a clerk had failed to remove the warrant from the computer. Booth said enforcement of pedestrian warrants was not a high priority in the Police Department.
