HEMINGWAY, S.C. —
Authorities Saturday decided to build an earthen dam around a burning warehouse and flood it with water to extinguish a two-day-old fire that forced out residents with clouds of toxic fumes.
About 1,000 persons were asked Friday to evacuate the area around the warehouse, which stored nylon and plastic, said Thom Berry, a spokesman for the state Department of Health and Environmental Control. No injuries were reported.
