The North County Transit District has been awarded a $6.9-million grant for operating costs, construction and purchase of buses and equipment.

District spokesman Mike Gillespie said Wednesday that the bus company has not been notified officially of the federal grant but that an application for that amount had been submitted.

About $2.7 million of the grant will go for operating costs, $2.6 million for 15 new 35-foot buses, $500,000 for a transit center in San Marcos and the remainder for paratransit vans, automobiles and equipment.
