Quarterback Steve Young and his attorney are scheduled to meet with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday for their “first real negotiating session” toward a contract, Young’s attorney said Wednesday.

Young, a member of the Los Angeles Express of the United States Football League, will undergo a physical examination and meet with members of the Buccaneer coaching staff, attorney Leigh Steinberg said.

The quarterback is also expected to meet with Tampa Bay team owner Hugh Culverhouse and his assistant, Phil Krueger, said Steinberg, who also represented Young in his negotiations with the Express last year.

Young hopes to get a chance to go through a brief workout during his stay, Steinberg said. That possibility is still tenuous because USFL officials have asked that Young take out an insurance policy against injury in such a workout.

Young received written permission to negotiate with Tampa Bay from USFL President Harry Usher and the Express two weeks ago, but Young’s obligations to the league are being contended.

The USFL maintains that Young is still a member of the Express, while Steinberg contends that the quarterback’s multimillion dollar contact was breached when it was assigned to the league when the Express ran into financial difficulty.
