The City Council, continuing its push to upgrade the Santa Monica Boulevard median, has hired a street-sweeping firm and a tree-trimming service to maintain the area regularly.

The South Bay Sweeping Co. will start work on Sept. 1, sweeping the boulevard five times weekly. The street is now swept two times a week. The council has also hired the Unified Pacific Corp. to regularly trim 225 ficus trees along the boulevard.

In recent years, merchants have complained that the trees were not maintained properly and projected a tawdry image. Earlier this year, the city began paying for maintenance.
