Worker Killed in Fall at Refinery

Share

A 27-year-old construction worker plunged 30 feet to his death when the roof he was dismantling at the Atlantic Richfield oil refinery in Carson collapsed into an empty oil reservoir.

Santiago Beltran of Los Angeles, who had been hired two days earlier to help dismantle the wooden roof, was killed Thursday about 1:15 p.m. when several sections of the roof gave way as he went to toss a loose piece of roofing paper over the edge, said George Lopez, owner of Lopez Refinery Equipment Co.

The firm, which had been hired for the project by Arco, has suspended work on the roof until next week, Lopez said.

The incident is being investigated by sheriff’s homicide detectives, who routinely investigate industrial accidents.
