Driver Jim Cook Has Heart Attack on Course, Dies
Veteran auto racer Jim Cook, 48, of Cypress died of a heart attack he suffered during qualifying for today’s Ford California Camel GTP race at Sears Point International Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.
Cook pulled to the side of the track in turn one during the final qualifying session with apparent chest pains. Track paramedics were observed giving him CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
He was rushed by a track ambulance to a hospital, where he died shortly after arrival. His wife was with him when he died.
Cook had been driving on a part-time basis for at least 20 years in various types of racing.
