Two earthquakes, measuring 4.5 and 6.0 on the Richter scale, rocked the western San Joaquin Valley near Coalinga, jostling residents but causing no injuries or serious damage. A house ceiling collapsed, several windows were broken and main water lines were broken in Avenal, but no damage was reported 17 miles south in Coalinga, where a 6.7 temblor struck in May, 1983, causing $31 million in damage. The earthquakes were centered about 10 miles southeast of Coalinga and were felt in Bakersfield, 90 miles southeast, and in Carpinteria, 125 miles south.
