A man suspected of shooting and killing a woman and wounding a man in Baja California has been arrested, San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson said. John Joe Arellano, 59, called San Diego police from a telephone booth in San Ysidro at 11:10 a.m. Monday and told them he had just shot two people at an isolated trailer park between Rosarito Beach and Ensenada, Robinson said. Police arrested him at the telephone booth on Hollister Street.

State Judicial Police, responding to reports from neighbors, found the body of Edith Brathe, 62, and the wounded man, Edmundo Fernandez, 71, at the trailer park. Both victims were American citizens, according to Lt. Paul Ybarrondo of the San Diego Police homicide division. Arellano and Brathe may have been married, Ybarrondo said. Fernandez reportedly was the landlord of the trailer park.

Arellano is being held on suspicion of bringing a gun into the United States. Baja and San Diego police are continuing homicide investigations, and the Mexican government may request that Arellano be extradited, Ybarrondo said.

Fernandez, who was shot in the shoulder, is in good condition at Tijuana General Hospital, according to Robinson.
