Boeing Co. plans to add 3,100 new jobs by the end of the year, company spokesman Harold Carr said Thursday.

“We’re pleased to see continued employment growth,” Carr said. “It’s good for the area.”

Boeing is the Puget Sound area’s largest industrial employer and the world’s largest producer of commercial airliners. According to Carr, the commercial airplane outlook continues to improve.

For example, Boeing now plans to deliver 200 jetliners this year, instead of the 194 that it originally planned to deliver. As a result, the company already has exceeded its employment projections for the year.

In January, Boeing predicted that it would hire 5,000 people nationwide. For the first seven months of the year, 5,900 were hired. “Boeing will continue to recall previously laid-off employees with needed skills,” Carr said. “Other personnel will be recruited for specific skill categories and will be expected to have extensive experience.”

Boeing is adding people “pretty much across the board,” Carr said. There will be new jobs in all of the company’s operating divisions, including its military operations.

At the end of July, Boeing’s nationwide employment was nearing 99,000.

In another development affecting Boeing, Yugoslav Airlines said it has added the first of four Boeing 737-300 twin-jets to its fleet.

The West German carrier Lufthansa and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines also have ordered the Boeing aircraft as part of their fleet replacement programs.
