Luxury Seniors Project Approved

A $25-million luxury development for senior citizens that would combine housing, shopping and convalescent facilities in one complex was approved by default after the Huntington Beach City Council deadlocked on the issue.

The council’s 3-3 vote means that the Planning Commission’s approval of the project is upheld. Plans call for 192 apartments, a 60-bed convalescent hospital, and 14,500 square feet of office and retail space on the ground floor of the building. Proposed for the retail space are such facilities as a bank and a travel agency.

The partnership of BWC/Vanderwood Co. would build the complex at Lake Street and Atlanta Avenue, and would provide maids as well as limousine and van service throughout the downtown area. The firm states that it will target “affluent, active seniors” as residents, said City Planner Howard Zelevsky.
