‘55-Limit Is Unenforceable’

Henley contends that the law is unenforceable and that the majority of the people do not wish to abide by it; it should therefore be changed.
I believe that both her premises are wrong. The law is enforceable. Authorities enforce all traffic laws and they certainly can enforce this one. They will have to do it anyway or they stand to loose a large amount of federal funds assigned to California, if they don’t.
Many people obey the law but even if a majority break it, this is is no way a sign that driving at unsafe speeds is to be permitted. The majority not always knows what is best for them. A few years ago most people smoked. This did not deter authorities from a campaign against smoking or from passing laws forbidding to smoke in public areas. Everybody, and I mean everybody, resents to pay taxes. Notwithstanding, tax laws are enforced no matter how the majority feels about them.
The decrease in the number of casualties and extend of injuries since the 55-m.p.h. law was passed is the most convincing argument in its favor.
I fervently hope that the law is here to stay.
