The folks at the Peace Corps aren’t laughing about Tri-Star Pictures’ upcoming Peace Corps spoof, “Volunteers.”

Hugh O’Neil, director of the corps’ public affairs office in Washington, said following an advance screening, “It’s a good comedy, but . . . it inaccurately portrays the Peace Corps.

“Obviously, (the film) does not portray real motivations of Peace Corpsmen,” said O’Neil, with a nod to the character played by Tom Hanks, an unscrupulous New England blueblood who joins the corps to escape a gambling debt.

O’Neil said that the corps suggested some changes in the script and they were made. “They involved some cultural sensitivities in regard to the Thais.” The film was shot in Mexico, doubling for Thailand.
