Act Was Meant to Protect

Share

Regarding Harry Bernstein’s July 31 column “Changing ALRB Worries Chavez’s Union,” what seems to have escaped the notice of Gov. George Deukmejian and those who side with him is that the Agricultural Labor Relations Act was passed for the express purpose of protecting otherwise helpless farm workers and their families from the unconscionable tactics of many California farmers.

I am constantly amazed to find that so many farmers who piously refer to themselves as “good Christians” are so anxious to return farm laborers to the status of farm animal that existed prior to the passage of the ALRA.
