Thurlow Rogers, a strong finisher but never a winner in the Coors International bicycle races, finally won a stage race with a daring breakaway Saturday.

Rogers, of Van Nuys, Calif., sprinted away from the pack early and rode about 40 miles of the 60-mile race on a downtown circuit alone.

Greg LeMond of Reno, America’s No. 1 bicycle rider, remained the overall leader.

Earlier Saturday, the race judges for the third time changed their minds about the Colorado National Monument road race held Friday near Grand Junction.

Olaf Jentzsch of East Germany finished the 76-mile event first, outsprinting LeMond and Andy Hampsten.

The judges first ruled that Jentzsch had been guilty of foul riding by interfering with Hampsten, and they placed LeMond first, Hampsten second and Jentzsch third.

Later Friday, the judges changed their minds and restored the original order of finish, and denying bonus time to Jentzsch and LeMond.

Then LeMond appealed, and Saturday, the judges restored his bonus time.

It gave him 20 seconds and made his overall lead 1 minute 45 seconds over Hampsten.
