Sixteen tellers at The Meadows harness race track in Meadow Lands, Pa., have resigned or been fired following their suspension last month for accepting bets on a race that already had been run, track officials said.
Nine of the mutuel clerks resigned voluntarily after making full restitution, while seven others were sent letters of discharge, said track spokesman Bob Sabot. One teller was exonerated.
The 17 tellers were suspended without pay July 26, a day after the race. A computer malfunction at the track was blamed for the incident, when betting windows in the grandstand remained open during the fourth race and closed several minutes after it ended.
Most of the tickets sold after the race started were winners, Sabot said.
