California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, has signed an $8.3-million lease-purchase contract with American Telephone & Telegraph Information Systems for an integrated telephone and data telecommunications system. University officials say the 10-year contract will give Cal Poly the largest private telecommunications system in the East San Gabriel and Pomona valleys. The university’s present telecommunications system has been provided by General Telephone since 1972.

The new digitally controlled and integrated telephone and data system is expected to better accommodate the university’s telephone and computer needs and save Cal Poly approximately $3 million over the next 10 years. Eventually, the telephone and data communications system will have the capacity to transmit and receive data at as many as 9,000 telephone and computer work stations. Installation of the system, which will be paid for out of Cal Poly’s existing budget allocations, is scheduled to be completed by early next year.
