Custom Craft Carpets of Northridge was ordered to pay $750,000 in civil penalties and to repay customers $256,645 because of false advertising and unfair business practices several years ago. After a 1981 non-jury trial of a consumer protection suit brought by the attorney general’s office, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Alfred L. Margolis enjoined the company from advertising carpeting that was unavailable at stated prices. The trial judge had refused to assess civil penalties or order restitution of customers’ payments, but appellate courts later instructed him to do so.
