SHEEN WITHDRAWS NAME FROM EMMYS
At his own request, Martin Sheen has dropped out of the running for an Emmy award for his performance in CBS’ “The Atlanta Child Murders,” making him the second actor this year to withdraw his name from consideration for television’s highest honor.
Bill Cosby, star of NBC’s hit “The Cosby Show,” made a similar request prior to the Aug. 5 announcement of Emmy nominations for prime-time programs in the 1984-85 season. Cosby had said that he does not believe in competition for awards by performers.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which granted Cosby’s wish, said Thursday it has done the same for Sheen who, like Cosby, said he does not believe in competing for awards.
Sheen’s name was entered in the Emmy competition “without his knowledge” by the producers of controversial CBS docudrama, the academy said.
The winners of Emmy awards for 1984-85 will be announced Sept. 22 during a national telecast on ABC.
