County : Panel Urges County to OK Airport Settlement
The county’s Airport Commission has voted unanimously to recommend that the Board of Supervisors accept a proposed settlement to years of lawsuits and allow limited expansion of John Wayne Airport.
The commissioners, who are appointed by the supervisors, voted in the face of opposition by nearly all of the 250 people who packed a county Hall of Administration hearing room Friday night.
Most opponents of the compromise, which involves the county, Newport Beach and homeowners living near the airport, were employees of the McDonnell Douglas Corp., who contended that the proposed agreement discriminates against a jetliner built by their company.
The homeowners groups are scheduled to consider the suggested settlement Monday, with the Newport Beach City Council and the Board of Supervisors taking it up on Tuesday.
