Becker to Play in Cincinnati Tourney
Boris Becker, the 17-year-old winner of the Wimbledon singles championship, will play in the ATP Championships here next week, tournament chairman Paul Flory announced.
Mats Wilander of Sweden won the tournament last year.
Becker, ranked ninth internationally, was a member of the 1984 West German Olympic Team. The native of Leimen, West Germany, won the German Junior Championships in 1982, 1983 and 1984.
“I try not to be too optimistic,” said Flory. “The odds were 60-40 in July but we got some indication last week when the German press asked for reservations here.”
Flory said five of the top 10 ranked players in the world signed to play in the tournament. They inlcude Wilander, Andres Gomez of Ecquador, Anders Jarryd of Sweden, Joakim Nystrom of Sweden and Becker.
