Liverpool soccer fans, blamed for a riot that claimed 39 lives at a game in Brussels in May, disrupted a memorial service for the victims at the start of the new English soccer season.

Derek Warlock, Archbishop of Liverpool, was leading the crowd of 38,000 in Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium in singing the hymn, “Abide With Me,” in memory of the victims when Liverpool fans began chanting obscenities.

Fans of Liverpool’s opponent, Arsenal of London, countered with chants of their own, and the rising choruses drowned out the hymn on the public address system.

Otherwise, there were no major incidents on opening day.
