Slippery Rock Gets Behind Its Own Heisman Candidate

NEW YORK UPI--For more than 40 years college football fans have chuckled at the mere mention of Slippery Rock University.

Once again the school is proving it has a sense of humor, too.

The school’s sports promotions department, headed by John Carpenter, has put together a tongue-in-cheek media promotion to publicize running back Chuck Sanders for the Heisman Trophy. It succeeds in poking fun at many of the large Division I-A schools who over the years have used every gimmick imagineable to publicize its stars for the Heisman Trophy.

Slippery Rock, a member of the NCAA’s Division II, doesn’t take itself quite so seriously.

The latest letter sent to football writers from the Chuck Sanders for Heisman Committee asks for suggestions on what would be the most effective next step in promoting last year’s Division II rushing champion.

Football writers are asked to recommend one of the following as an appropriate method in keeping Sanders’ name in everyone’s memory bank:

--A life-size (6-foot-2), weighted (230 pounds) cutout of Sanders for your office or den.

--An 11 X 14 glossy, color picture of Sanders posing with a beautiful coed.

--A film clip of Sanders’ 1985 “miracle play.”

--A key chain that, when tilted in proper sequence, shows Sanders rushing for a touchdown.

--A new pronunciation guide that enables Sanders’ name to rhyme with Heisman.
