ON THE COVER: NBC, which usually greets the day with the “Today” show, gives that long-running program an hour of prime time this week.

“Today--At Night,” Monday from 8 to 9 p.m. on Channels 4, 36, 39, will have regular “Today” hosts Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley at the helm. Regulars Gene Shalit, weatherman Willard Scott and newsman John Palmer also will do their things.

The idea, executive producer Steve Friedman says, is to showcase what “Today” is doing and plans to do.
