At least five horses, including a one-time world champion, were killed when a barn caught fire at The Red Mile harness race track at Lexington, Ky., authorities said.
The exact number of dead horses was unknown, but early reports varied between 12 and 20.
Among the horses killed was Banker Barker, a 7-year-old gelding who was the top male trotter in 1981 and who had earned nearly $600,000 in his career.
