Supervisors Urge Gates to Fight Crime at Bryant-Vanalden Site

The county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday urged Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl F. Gates to use all the resources available to him to combat drug and prostitution problems in the embattled Bryant-Vanalden apartment complex in Northridge.
Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, whose district includes Northridge, said the area “has become a regular supermarket for the young” to buy and sell drugs and to fall into prostitution.
His motion, unanimously approved by the board, directed that copies of the request to Gates also be sent to Mayor Tom Bradley and City Councilman Hal Bernson, in whose district the development lies.
The run-down Bryant-Vanalden complex has been under fire since Aug. 7, when the Los Angeles City Council gave preliminary approval to a plan that would make it easier to evict its mostly Latino residents to make way for a gated, middle-income community. Antonovich, however, made no mention of the eviction plan.
Neighbors of the development have complained that it is an eyesore and police have said it is overrun with crime.
