The Phoenix Suns, one day after trading veteran power forward Maurice Lucas to their biggest National Basketball Assn. rivals, signed rookie center Nick Vanos to a multiyear contract.

A source close to the negotiations said that Vanos agreed to a five-year contract with an option year, adding that the pact is worth about $1 million with incentives. In addition, the first two years are guaranteed.

The 7-2, 258-pound Vanos was Phoenix’s second-round pick and the 32nd player taken overall in last June’s college draft.

“It’s unparalleled to give a second-rounder this kind of contract,” said Vanos’ agent, Bob LaMonte. “He’s got a contract better than most of the centers taken in 1984 and most of the centers taken this year. A lot of people are a little flabbergasted over this, but the Suns must think he has some outstanding abilities.”

Last season, Vanos was the nation’s 11th-leading rebounder at the University of Santa Clara with a 10.8 average. He also averaged 16.8 points per game.
