The state Public Utilities Commission on Wednesday approved the sale of city street lights by San Diego Gas & Electric to the city.

Under the sales agreement, the city will purchase the system for $1,042,000. After the city assumes ownership of the street lights, it will no longer pay SDG&E; for maintenance and operation of the system, and will be eligible to purchase energy from the power company at a lower rate than it now pays.

At a later date, the PUC will rule on whether a profit of almost $300,000 earned by SDG&E; from the sale should be divided among the company’s shareholders, or returned to its customers.
