Cable television operators from across the country will be invited to apply for a San Diego franchise, under a measure endorsed Wednesday by the City Council Transportation and Land Use Committee.

Responses are due to the city manager’s office in 60 days, and an evaluation committee to be appointed by the City Council will recommend whether any of the proposals should be accepted. The city decided to solicit bids after a recent court decision ruling that cable companies, not governments, should set rates charged to subscribers. Cox Cable and Southwestern Cable now serve the city, and together they have about 200,000 subscribers.
