In an effort to stop pay phone thefts in North County, Pacific Bell has offered a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons involved in the thefts.

Seventeen phones and pedestals have been ripped from the ground in Escondido, San Marcos, Vista and Valley Center since June 30. The latest three thefts occurred in Escondido late Monday night, when two phones were taken from San Pasquale High School on Bear Valley Road and one was taken from a liquor store on East Valley Parkway.

Police believe the phone pedestals were chained to a pickup truck and dragged from their foundations. Five of the phones have been recovered, one with its change box smashed. Police have disclosed no leads in the case. Pacific Bell asked that persons with information about the thefts call either the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department or the Escondido Police Department.
