Local News in Brief : Study OKd on Ventura University Center Site
The Assembly Ways and Means Committee has unanimously approved a bill that would authorize a study to select a site for a permanent University Center in Ventura County.
The present University Center, which operates in rented office space in the city of Ventura, serves 600 students and is jointly run by California State University, Northridge and UC Santa Barbara. The bill was introduced by Sen. Gary K. Hart (D-Santa Barbara) and was approved by the Senate in June.
If approved by the Assembly and signed by the governor, it would also direct state education officials to determine the types of higher education programs needed in Ventura County.
The development of a four-year state university has long been a goal of Ventura County officials.
Hart said that the “continued success of the University Center could provide the impetus for locating the next campus of the state university system in Ventura County.”
