San Gabriel Valley Wins Babe Ruth Game

Mike Richardson’s double in the seventh inning scored the winning run for San Gabriel Valley as it edged past New Braunfels, Tex., 6-5, Thursday in the Babe Ruth World Series for 16- to 18-year-olds.

Jeff Lamb picked up the victory for the San Gabriel Valley team after taking the mound in the fourth inning. Each team had 10 hits, among them Jimmy Walker’s two-run homer in the second inning for New Braunfels.

In Thursday’s second game, winning pitcher Eddie Ponte allowed only six hits as Sarasota, Fla. sailed past Redmond, Wash., 6-3, in the battle between the only two undefeated teams.

Mark Dawn, in his only plate appearance, hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend Sarasota’s lead.

Redmond will square off against San Gabriel Valley Friday, and the winner of that game will meet Sarasota, the only undefeated team left in the series.
