Louisiana State District Judge Alvin Oser will hold a hearing today in New Orleans to discuss whether he will modify the language of a mistrial order in the state’s sports bribery case against former Tulane basketball star John (Hot Rod) Williams.

The language of the mistrial order as it stands contains the potential for setting Williams free without trial. Williams is accused of conspiracy and bribery charges carrying a maximum sentence of 17 years in prison and $35,000 in fines.

Even if Williams avoids state prosecution, U.S. Attorney John Volz said that federal charges might be brought against him.
