Anthony Carter has gained his release from the United States Football League and is ready to join the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League.
USFL representatives meeting in Atlantic City, N.J., convened for seven hours to discuss a variety of problems, and the 14 teams agreed to waive their rights to Carter, who starred for the Oakland Invaders last season.
Commissioner Harry Usher said a decision was also confirmed to play the 1986 season in the more traditional football period of September to January rather than from November to March. In addition, he said the league hopes to consolidate to 12 teams for the 1986 season and to have a franchise in Los Angeles.
Carter is expected to sign a $2 million contract with the Vikings and perhaps be in uniform as early as Monday.
