Navratilova, Lendl Win in Open

NEW YORK —
Martina Navratilova began her bid for a third successive U.S. Open championship today with a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 victory over Pascale Paradis. Navratilova, No. 2 seed, broke service on her first opportunity of each set against the 19-year-old Frenchwoman.
Earlier, second-seeded Ivan Lendl, runner-up for the last three years, scored an easy 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jay Lapidus.
