American swimmer Matt Biondi and Soviet gymnast Natalia Yurchenko each won their fourth gold medals of the World University Games at Kobe, Japan.

Biondi, who anchored the winning U.S. 400-meter freestyle relay team, will go for a fifth gold Friday in the medley relay.

Biondi and his teammates finished the freestyle relay in 3 minutes 20.12 seconds, beating the University Games record of 3:21.72.

Earlier, Biondi, 19, of Moraga, Calif., had won golds in the 100-and 200-meter freestyle races and in one relay and had won a silver in the 100-meter butterfly.

Yurchenko added golds in the floor exercises and uneven parallel bars to her earlier women’s team and all-around titles.
