No New Contract but Marino Ends His Holdout
Miami Dolphin quarterback Dan Marino, who walked out of training camp July 24 in a contract dispute with owner Joe Robbie, said Saturday that he was returning to the team immediately.
Marino, who set NFL records for passing yards and touchdowns while leading Miami to last season’s Super Bowl, said he had not yet signed a new contract but hoped that Robbie would make him an offer soon.
“I am returning to the team as of today,” Marnio said at a Saturday afternoon news conference. “I can no longer let these circumstances with Mr. Robbie affect my personal life. I want to return because I feel a strong obligation to my teammates, my family and the fans of the Miami Dolphins. I am not being forced or coerced in any way.”
Marino, entering his third season, said he hoped he would be ready to play in the Dolphins’ season opener next Sunday at Houston.
Coach Don Shula had said Marino could play if he reported as late as Monday--assuming he has a sharp week of practice.
