American League Roundup : Blue Jays Lose, 4-1, at Home

Like most teams in the league, the Chicago White Sox have seen enough of the Toronto Blue Jays.

That’s why Manager Tony LaRussa was eager to get his White Sox to the airport for their charter flight Sunday after a 4-1 victory over the Blue Jays before 44,182 fans--third-largest crowd of the season in Toronto.

“The Blue Jays have kicked us all year long,” LaRussa told the Associated Press. “Everybody would like to be in their position.”

It was Chicago’s third victory in 12 meetings against the Blue Jays this season, and the first in six games and two trips to Toronto.

Adding to the White Sox’s satisfaction was the fact that their win helped slice Toronto’s lead over the New York Yankees to four games in the East.

Britt Burns (15-8) shut out the Blue Jays on five hits through seven innings before giving way to Bob James, who allowed Toronto’s only run on Cliff Johnson’s single in the eighth.

“I figured Burns had had enough,” LaRussa explained of his decision to pull him. “He lost a bit in the seventh but that was a most impressive inning. He saved James for the ninth.”

The White Sox took a 1-0 lead off Steve Davis (1-1), who was making his first major league start, when Carlton Fisk doubled home a run in the first. Harold Baines hit a two-run homer in the third and Ron Kittle made it 4-0 with his 15th homer in the fourth. Baines has 15 homers this season and six in the last 11 days.

Texas 5, Kansas City 3--Oddibe McDowell had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run as the Rangers completed a three-game sweep of the Royals at home.

The Royals remained 2 1/2 games behind the Angels in the West.

Mike Mason (6-12), who gave up eight hits in seven innings, won his first game since June 15. Dwayne Henry pitched the final two innings for his first save. Danny Jackson (12-9) took the loss.

Steve Balboni hit his 28th homer for the Royals.

Seattle 10, Baltimore 2--Alvin Davis hit a three-run homer and Jack Perconte collected five singles as the Mariners trounced the Orioles on Jim Palmer Day at Baltimore.

Matt Young (10-14) scattered seven hits, including Mike Young’s 23rd home run, over eight innings. The loser was Dennis Martinez (11-8), who had a four-game winning streak snapped.

The Orioles retired the uniform No. 22 worn by Palmer, the three-time Cy Young Award winner. Orioles’ owner Edward Bennett Williams said to Palmer: “No. 22 will never be worn by an Oriole again, Jim, with the possible exception of you.”

Boston 10, Minnesota 3--Jim Rice and Tony Armas hit home runs as the Red Sox collected 16 hits while pounding the Twins at Minneapolis.

Rice, Wade Boggs and Bill Buckner each had three hits. Boggs went 3 for 6, raising his league-leading average to .362.He was 11 for 19 in the four-game series.

Detroit 14, Oakland 3--Chet Lemon hit two solo homers and singled in another run, and Barbaro Garbey added a three-run double during a nine-run eighth inning as the Tigers routed the A’s at Detroit.

Cleveland 11, Milwaukee 4--Joe Carter homered, singled twice and stole three bases to lead the Indians past the Brewers at Milwaukee.
