A veteran police officer investigating an attempted theft of a car shot and wounded a 19-year-old man who allegedly pointed a gun at the officer and his partner, police said. Walter Sosa, who suffered gunshot wounds in both legs, was shot by Officer Larry James in the 700 block of North Madison Avenue, Lt. Charles Higbie said. James, a 15-year veteran, and his partner, Officer Juliana Tingirides, spotted Sosa running in the area minutes after a group of men tried to steal a car and shot at the driver, Higbie said. Higbie said James shot at Sosa twice from the driver’s seat of his squad car after Sosa pointed a revolver at the officers and refused to drop the weapon. Sosa was listed in stable condition at County-USC Medical Center.
