Navratilova, Graf in Semifinal

Defending champion Martina Navratilova and 16-year-old Steffi Graf of West Germany today swept into a semifinal showdown at the U.S. Open Tennis Championships.

And in the men’s quarterfinals, Mats Wilander, the No. 3 seed, advanced when fellow Swede Anders Jarryd, seeded sixth, withdrew in the third set due to an upset stomach. Navratilova brushed past No. 6 seed Zina Garrison 6-2, 6-3. Graf, No. 11 seed, upset Navratilova’s doubles partner, No. 4 seed Pam Shriver, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6.
