The Arcadia City Council will hold a public hearing Sept. 17 on a proposed commercial sign ordinance requiring that a portion of any sign be in the Roman alphabet and that the address be displayed on the building in Arabic numerals. The Planning Department has recommended that not more than one-third of a sign identifying a business be in non-English, Donna Butler of the department said. She said the main purpose is to enable police and firefighters to easily find a location and that a secondary purpose is to help the public find locations. Butler said there has been no recent increase in signs in Asian languages but that Arcadia wanted to address the issue before problems arise. Other cities with similar ordinances include Temple City, Monterey Park and El Monte.
