COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Cal State Northridge vs. Nevada-Reno

Share

At MacKay Stadium, Reno 1 p.m.

CSUN Coach Tom Keele unveils his run-and-shoot offense after another dismal season (a 3-7 record that included a forfeit win and last place in the Western Football Conference) convinced him to abandon the traditional pro-set offense he had run for six seasons. CSUN’s new pass-first, run-second approach, led by quarterback Chris Parker, will be severely tested by the Reno Wolfpack, which finished second in the Big Sky Conference last season with a 7-4 record and returns leading interceptors Patrick Hunter and Joe Petersen and leading tackler Mike Dixon. . . . Defensively, the Matadors will face one of the Big Sky Conference’s leading quarterbacks in Eric Beavers, who passed for 2,370 yards and 16 TDs in 1984, and All-Conference receiver Bryan Calder, who caught 53 passes for 958 yards and six TDs. When Reno wants to grind it out, it goes to fullback Johnny Gordon, who rushed for 654 yards last season.

JUNIOR COLLEGE

Pierce vs. Antelope Valley

At Shepard Stadium, Pierce College 7:30 p.m.

Pierce Coach Jim Fenwick is aiming for a balanced passing and running game, which involves adhering to the same offensive formula the Brahmas used last year when they were undefeated in the Southern California Conference and were runners-up in the Potato Bowl (10-1). But the selection of freshman Steve Haddad at quarterback over sophomore Joe Broussard indicates that Pierce probably will go for the passing offense--at least tonight. “Steve’s worked real hard and he’s a big strong guy,” Fenwick said. “We expect he will do well.” Antelope Valley will counter with quarterback Ron Chaplin. This will be Chaplin’s first start since breaking his arm in Pierce’s 31-7 victory over Antelope Valley in last year’s preseason matchup. Antelope Valley was co-champion of the Foothill Conference last season with a 5-4-1 overall record, 4-1 in conference.
