AIA Program to Examine Artist’s Role

“Collaborations”--between architects, artists, developers and owners in the development of monumental art for public spaces--will be the third program in the “Architecture/Art: An Urban Renaissance” series sponsored by the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects on Sept. 17 at the Design Center Auditorium, 433 S. Spring St.

The program, which will take the place of the chapter’s September meeting, will be moderated by Marcy Goodwin, Los Angeles architectural coordinator-consultant, and will center on the importance of beginning to work with the artists at the conception of a building project to avoid aesthetic, structural and engineering headaches.

The panel will consist of L. C. Pei, associate for facilities for arts and media technology, I. M. Pei Partners; Richard A. Kahan, former chairman, Battery Park City Authority, New York City, and managing director of Continental Development Group; and Siah Armanjani and Elyn Zimmerman, site specific artists.

Admission is $20 at the door for institute members, $25 for non-members and $5 for students. Advance reservations are not required. Details are available from the sponsoring chapter at 8687 Melrose Ave.
