WFC ROUNDUP : Summerfield’s Five TD Passes Lead an Upset by Portland St.

Quarterback Terry Summerfield passed for five touchdowns Saturday to lead Portland State to a 46-28 upset victory over defending NCAA Division I-AA champion Montana State in the season opener for both teams in Portland, Ore.

Summerfield, a 6-3 senior, completed 25 of 35 passes for 405 yards and threw for touchdowns of 63, 22, 9, 13 and 15 yards. The 63-yarder to wide receiver Brian Coushay on the Vikings’ first possession capped a four-play drive and put them ahead to stay.

Montana State junior Kelly Bradley completed 40 of 60 passes--including a school record-tying 13 receptions by tailback David Pandt--for 388 yards and three touchdowns, as the two teams combined for 981 yards in total offense. Portland State had 492 yards to Montana State’s 489.

The Bobcats, who trailed, 29-14, at halftime, got as close as 39-28 with 11 minutes left in the game. But the Vikings sealed the game two minutes later on a 15-yard pass from Summerfield to Tim Corrigan, who earlier had a 22-yard scoring reception.

Fullback Tim Richardson rushed for 76 yards and three touchdowns and a Pacific University’s ball-hawking defense snared five interceptions Saturday night as the Tigers rolled to a 49-17 victory over visiting Sacramento State at Stockton, Calif.

Pacific scored 21 points in the first quarter, including a 56-yard touchdown pass play from quarterback Greg Murphy to wide receiver Kurt Heinrich. Junior quarterback Huey Jackson hit 6 of 9 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns.
