V. Orville Wright, one of the pioneers in the drive to establish competition in the long-distance telephone business, will become vice chairman of the board of MCI Communications on Oct. 1, MCI said Monday.

The post was created for Wright, who intends to step down as president and chief operating officer of the nation’s second-largest long-distance company when he reaches age 65.

“His acceptance of the vice chairmanship and his willingness to remain on the board and serve as a consultant to the corporation assures that the management and stockholders of MCI will continue to benefit from his wealth of experience and invaluable counsel,” said William G. McGowan, chairman and chief executive.

The announcement said a successor to Wright is expected to be named later this month.
